The other day at work I asked a customer politely if I could check her bag before she entered the fitting rooms. She replied “I’m a dentist, I make a lot of money. I don’t need to steal from your store.” Trying to refrain from laughing in her face I then replied “I understand that but I still need to check your bag.” Slowly she opened her bag, stared at me and said: “Yes, that’s a real Gucci bag… It costs a lot of money.” It was then that I lost all elements of professionalism and replied “I don’t care about your Gucci bag, it’s just company policy that I have to check it.” She then gave me the stink eye as I let her into the fitting room. After she left (leaving all of her items inside-out and on the floor of the fitting room), I was left with several thoughts clouding my mind.
I initially thought that she was the absolute embodiment of a pathetic person, but then I felt sorry for her. Sorry for the fact she uses materialistic means to make herself feel adequate. Sorry for the fact that she believes that such monetary items add to her appeal and give her some sort of status. She was a brilliant example of what I wouldn’t want to be like, and I felt enlightened to realise that.
Oh and Gucci bags are fucking ugly anyway. FOOL!
